Taylor and Trenton have party plans too

By Gary Gosselin, Heritage Newspapers

Fun events aren’t limited to only the four cities of the Cruise July 8 weekend; nearby Trenton and Taylor also have full plates of fun stuff to do too.

Trenton is holding its 25th annual Mid-Summer Festival July 7, 8 and 9, and it’s held downtown, just one mile south of the cruise and one-half mile east along Jefferson Avenue in the Riverfront business district.

The hours of the festival are 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. July 7 and 8 and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 9.

The event attracts more than 150,000 visitors each year with top name entertainment, more than 200 artists and craftsmen, a children’s play market, and a popular array of sporting tournaments, including co-ed volleyball, 3-on-3 basketball and horseshoes.

In cooperation with Cruisin’ Downriver, the city invites cruisers to partake in the Mid-Summer Festival activities. There is secured parking at Danou Enterprises, located just past Sibley on the east side of Fort Street just for classic car owners, and from Danou, a complimentary shuttle will take participants to downtown Trenton to enjoy entertainment, arts and more!

For additional information, call Trenton Parks and Recreation office 1-734-675-7300.

Just east of the cruise, Taylor will hold its Taylor Summer Festival July 6-9 at Heritage Park, on Pardee Road between Goddard and North Line roads.

Along with the Downriver area’s largest fireworks display are three days of musical concerts in the park, a huge carnival, many family events, two new 5K runs, a unique mud-volleyball tournament, a Las Vegas-style room and some special guest appearances.

"This Taylor Summer Festival has become a regional event and continues to grow each year," said Daniel Martinez, executive director of the Department of Parks and Recreation, which coordinates the Summer Festival.

"The Young Country Jam is one of the musical highlights of the summer and the more than 150,000 people who visit each year make the event Downriver’s biggest and best festival. There is something for everyone at this year’s festival."

The Young Country Jam — two days of popular country music — will take place July 7 and 8. The Kentucky HeadHunters are the main event of the Jam on July 7, performing at 9 p.m. Teen-age superstar Lila McCann takes the stage of the July 8 show at 9:45 p.m.

The concerts start at 4:15 p.m. July 7 and 4 p.m. July 8. Also scheduled for July 7 are Black Market and Wild Woodies. The Forbes Brothers, WB Owens and Midnight Holler, and Red Ryder are also slated to play on July 8. Further participants will be announced.
