WYANDOTTE CRUISE PARTY TO HAVE YOUNGER FEEL THIS
YEAR
WYANDOTTE — Those who come to the
city for Cruisin’ Downriver will notice a distinctive younger feel to
the party.
As in the past, the Wyandotte
Business Association and AutoAlliance International Inc. are teaming up
to provide an enjoyable place to watch the parade of classic cars, at
the corner of Fort Street and Grove, in the Sav-A-Lot parking lot.
However, this year the children
will have more to do than just watch the cars.
Free inflatable bouncers, provided
by Bouncing Off the Wall, will enable the youngsters to burn off excess
energy while mom and dad enjoy the cruise. The bouncers will be
available both Friday and Saturday, as will free balloons. Free face
painting will be offered Saturday only.
Michelle Cox, office manager for
the Wyandotte Business Association, said it became apparent to her and
other members of the board who plan the event that something more needed
to be offered for children.
“At our spot, there was nothing for
kids to do, and this is a family event,” Cox said. “They (children) only
like to watch cars for so long.”
Adults also will find new
activities and things to check out at the Wyandotte portion of the Cruisin’ Downriver party, including a karaoke contest from 6 to 9 p.m.
Friday. Rushlow Entertainment will provide the music.
Party organizers are excited about
having Keith Coleman on hand both Friday and Saturday. Coleman, a
renowned metal artist, will display his one-of-a-kind custom-made hot
rod.
“Keith is known around Wyandotte by
his many metal sculptures throughout town, such as the Wyandotte bear in
front of Roosevelt High School, the Merrill Lynch bull and many other
sculptures in front of River’s Edge Gallery,” Cox said.
Another new feature that will be
offered both days are mini psychic readings, provided by the Boston Tea
Room, for a cost of $12.
On Saturday, AutoAlliance and Ford
Motor Co. will have cars on display, including a 2006 convertible Shelby
GT500, a Ford Racing Mustang NASCAR pace car, a Fusion NASCAR race car,
a Ford 500 GT-R and several classic cars owned by employees.
Also on Saturday, AutoAlliance will
give away free dash plaques and disc jockey Brian Cook will spin tunes
befitting a cruise atmosphere.
Official Cruisin’ Downriver shirts
and hats will be for sale, as well as “Do it in the Dotte” shirts. With
every $15 purchase, buyers will receive an entry for a gas card drawing.
Refreshments available for purchase
on both days include hot dogs, sausages, pop, water, popcorn and chips.
Cox said the business association
doesn’t keep track of how many people visit its tent, but each year she
orders 500 shirts and sells most of them. She said organizers are hoping
that the attractions added this year will induce more cruisegoers to
stop by.
